

The series took influence from Tim Burton's live-action films, Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), and the acclaimed Superman theatrical cartoons produced by Fleischer Studios in the early 1940s. Another continuation of the series is in development in the form of an audio podcast drama, with most of the cast returning along with writer Alan Burnett. The series became the first in the continuity of the shared DC Animated Universe, which spawned further animated TV series, feature films, comic books and video games with much of the same creative talent, including the 1993 theatrical release Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. The series also won multiple Daytime Emmy Awards, as well as the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Programming. To accentuate the intricate lines of the car, the engine panels, wheels, and undercarriage were indirectly lit so that they appeared to glow blue. Ling wanted to have a more organic aesthetic, and so designed a car that looked like it actually had ribs and wings. One of the changes was a new Batmobile, designed by Barbara Ling.
